My mother, in the middle of receiving an update on my uncle’s heart condition during the obligatory Christmas phone calls with those who cannot be in attendance, lost interest in the call, somehow, and began angling for my attention. Once she had it, she gestured over to the iron lantern she’s regifting to me, and excitedly mouthed the words “Made in France!”
